Charlotte carried this handkerchief on her return to the Pensionnat Heger in 1843. During that year Charlotte developed a passion for her married teacher Monsieur Heger and was driven to visit a Catholic priest to make ‘a real confession’. She took her final leave of Brussels in a desperate state of mind, but parting from Monsieur Heger filled her with grief.
The handkerchief bears her initials and a self-caricature. It is trimmed with Brussels lace believed to have been a gift from Madame Heger.
